The Return of Maximalism: Are Bold Prints Replacing Minimalism?

Written By Luc Cormier

Has the minimalist era truly ended, or are we collectively experiencing a brief mirage of visual excitement?

In the early part of the year, a brief trend of Deer Print made its way around TikTok and even onto the Tory Burch runway. This trend felt like a remnant of the coquette aesthetic to me. On Tory Burch, it had an edgy flair, giving it a fresher take on a trend that was already on its way out.

In general, Animal Print has been on the rise since 2025. Spots and dots, in general, are very in this year. The animal print trend acts like the rebellious, more organic sister to stripes and polka dots. However, polka dots can still be rebellious when donned by Addison Rae at Coachella last year when she joined Charli xcx on stage. Her version fit right into her intentionally referential and alternative style. The look is flirtatious, fluorescent and feminine (which seem to Addison’s three favourite F-words).

Recently, at the MET Gala, Connor Storie wore a Yves Saint Laurent polka-dot cape/scarf. The look is a great example of a subtle, feminine polka dot on a masculine figure. The look is a great example of how brands can implement trends like dots and bold patterns and tone them down to fit into their house codes. In this case, YSL’s take on the polka dot is quieter but not free of subversion.

The pattern seems to be evolving into the third dimension, with many details extending from the garments. This extruding pattern idea is not particularly revolutionary, The most recent Jaquemus collection featured jackets with floating dots, pom-poms, polka dots, and animal patterns All of this while still subscribing to the brand's clean house codes.

This jacket is a covered in dots on the fabric and on wires that bounced as the model walked down the runway. The playful bright colours combined with the whimsical bouncing dots is surreal and chic!

Mathieu Blazy showed bold patterns, 3D florals, plaid, and stripes in his debut collection for Chanel back in October. This show generated a lot of buzz because it was Blazy’s debut, but it also set the tone for fashion in the coming year.

This look appears from afar as a tweed and plaid pattern, but up close is a wonderful tactile experience. The fabric brings plaid into the third dimension.

This look is example of a more organic approach that uses flower appliqués to create a pattern on top of a sheer mauve gown.

The most recent Louis Vuitton Resort 2027 collection is already a much-discussed example of bold patterns and maximalism. Nicholas Ghesquiere was inspired by Keith Haring, New York, and Edwardian fashion. The looks are chaotic, bordering on overstimulating, but certainly thought-provoking.

The opening look is one of the more relaxed moments of the collection. A zebra print belt acts as an omen of what is to come, and Ghesquiere capitalizes on the animal print belt trend.

Look 10 is a pink dress with black lace layered on top, and then yellow tulle swirled into a pattern all over. The swirls add an ephemeral, organic energy to the look.

Look 43 is an example of bold floral patterns in a dress that starts as a buttery yellow that melts into a bright pink.

The passion for patterns is certainly an exciting trend. Bold expression, individualism, and dopamine are coming into fashion more and more every day.
