The Most Expensive Handbags Sold at Auction This Year

Written By Sarah Eros

The luxury handbag market continues to surprise and keep us on our toes every year, and this year it reached another level, with collectors spending record-breaking amounts on rare pieces from Hermès and Chanel. The handbags are not just purses to add to your outfit, they ARE  the outfit now, in the same category as collectible watches, fine jewelry, and even art. Auction houses are selling rarity, history, and access.

The 2026 season begins with Christie’s Hong Kong Luxury Week on May 25, followed by Christie’s New York online handbag sale running from May 28 to June 11. These early auctions will set the tone for the season and are rumoured to feature rare Hermès pieces and archival Chanel designs that appeal to collectors seeking highly specific additions to their collections. June becomes the most anticipated time of luxury handbag activity. Bonhams London (June 1–10) highlights rare Louis Vuitton collaborations. Shortly after, Sotheby’s New York (June 9–23) shifts focus back to Hermès, featuring exotic lizard and diamond hardware variations that sit at the highest tier of collectible luxury due to their material rarity and controlled production.

One of the standout Hermès pieces circulating in the 2026 season is the White Birkin 20 Faubourg, listed in Christie’s Paris handbag auction with an estimate of €180,000-€300,000. This version of the Birkin has circulated talk around it because it references the brand’s architectural Faubourg concept. To collectors, this is more than just a handbag; it is a design object tied directly to Hermès heritage and storefront identity. Its miniature scale, limited availability, and detailed recreation of the iconic Faubourg Saint-Honoré flagship transform it from an accessory into a highly collectible piece of brand history, helping justify its six-figure estimate. Alongside these, Christie’s 2026 Paris sales also include Hermès Kelly Doll and Quelle Idole variations, with estimates ranging from approximately €12,000 to €40,000 depending on edition and condition. These designs have developed a strong collector following because they represent a more experimental side of Hermès craftsmanship, blending playfulness with exclusivity.

It comes as no surprise that Hermès continuously dominates auctions beyond the famous Birkin prototype. At Heritage Auctions’ Spring Luxury Accessories sale in April 2026, rare pieces like the Himalaya Birkin and limited-edition Kelly bags gained lots of attention with global bidding, helping the auction reach over $3 million in sales overall. The Himalaya Birkin in particular remains one of the most sought-after bags in the world due to its painstaking dye process, which creates a gradient resembling the snow-capped Himalayas, and because the most desirable versions feature diamond-encrusted hardware. These exotic Hermès bags remain some of the most desired luxury items because of how limited production already is before they even enter resale markets. Prices like this exist because of the bag’s exclusivity, which is reinforced by the purchasing process through exclusive boutiques, waitlists, and client relationships that make them extremely difficult to obtain directly, driving even stronger demand within auctions and resale markets where buyers know they are competing for rare pieces.

Think of it in a way as long-term investments, believing certain rare bags will continue increasing in value over time.

Across this year's auctions, one pattern becomes clear: value is no longer driven by recognition alone. Collectors are responding to specificity; they value limited production techniques, unusual materials, and historical design references. Hermès continues to dominate the highest-value category, while Chanel maintains strong performance through archival runway pieces that reflect distinct moments in fashion history. So keep an eye out for those rare pieces of fashion history that will likely never return to circulation.
