RUNWAY
FAT - Grimy
WRITTEN BY FELIX SHENTALER

Montreal has never lacked creative energy, but since 2016, one brand has managed to bottle that electricity and turn it into a cultural engine. Grimey, an experiential lifestyle and streetwear label, has carved out a place for itself by building a world rooted in music, community, and the raw honesty of underground expression. Operating within the underground art and music scene, Grimey uses clothing and concept as tools for connection, empowerment, and authentic cultural expression.
Grimey’s in-house visual storytelling, collaborative activations, and presence in the city’s art and music scenes have shaped a distinct identity: gritty, emotional, and defiantly authentic. Clothing isn’t just a product; it’s a medium for connection and a tool for empowerment. Every visual is tied to the community that fuels it. It embraces the worn-in, the chaotic, the unrefined. In Grimey’s hands, that aesthetic becomes a statement about lived experience—clothes that look like they’ve been through something because the people wearing them have.
Their latest concept, Riot!, captures the current emotional climate, channelling tension, frustration, resilience, and the collective weight of living through a moment defined by upheaval.

The collection features denim and patterns throughout, quickly establishing a visual narrative and a cohesive palette to ground it. Vivid colours and bold, expressive lines push each silhouette further, creating a sense of movement and urgency that mirrors the brand’s energy. Dark leather pieces throughout help to break up the vivid outfits and ground the looks in an alternative aesthetic. Models wore dark and unconventional makeup, nearly every model was outfitted with a Grimey-branded bandage (or four), and the hair was as bold and expressive as the collection itself.
As a staple presence in the Montreal art and music scene, the brand has long drawn from punk’s raw, unfiltered spirit, and in this collection, that inspiration rises unmistakably to the surface. Punk movements have historically stood at the forefront of political protest, channelling frustration, hope, and defiance through community and aesthetics, and with a collection inspired by uncertainty and tension, alternative fashion encapsulates that idea perfectly. By embracing the visual language of rebellion—distressed textures, confrontational graphics, and bold contrasts—Grimey captures the emotional volatility of the moment and bottles it into one runway.
Grimey stands out by simply being what it has always been: a conduit for expression. Riot! is just the latest chapter in a story shaped by emotion, resistance, and the power of collective identity. It serves as a reminder that fashion can be more than style; it can be a rallying cry, a reflection of community, and a testament to the voices that refuse to be quiet.
